The Cyanotype Primer, Part 1 Of 2
This is the first section of a two-part introduction to the cyanotype photographic process. My introduction, or “cyanotype primer”, was originally intended to be a single recording when edited together, but due to length I broke it up into two segments. This first segment focuses mainly on the citrate-based process (i.e., the use of citrate salts to effect the photochemical reduction of ferric to ferrous ions), as invented by Sir John Frederick William Herschel in 1842. The second segment focuses on the oxalate-based process, developed by Michael Ware in 1994.
